I help PhD students who feel Very Stuck or Very Lost to finish their dissertation by seeing it as a learning adventure, not just a task.

10/10: WHO this is for is very clear (stuck PhD students), as is WHAT you do (finish their dissertations). What I especially love about this, however, is the HOW: they shift their perspective on their dissertation from “task” (drudgery/heavy/stagnant) to “learning adventure” (fun/light/dynamic). Nice! This truly is how most people get stuck, in my experience. It makes me curious as to how you accomplish this. Plus, your cheeky photo is consistent with your lightened-up intellectual mission.
10/10: Love your cheeky smile and fun image. I would definitely trust you to take me on that learning adventure. Very clear and appealing in total.
This sounds like a godsend to me, having been to graduate school and still contemplating a PhD. Clear as a bell and also describing what I would want from my dissertation-writing experience. Yes!
10/10: I hope that’s a real brain you’re holding! You sound like the gift ABDs have been waiting for. If only all schooling could actually feel like a learning adventure. I wonder if there’s a stronger word than “task”: trial, grind, etc.
Took a quick look at your website . . . love how you unpacked “brain habits.” In terms of Tad’s question: are there enough in your target group? I am wondering if you are currently getting your service offering out there in the context of dissertation writing groups…when I read your meme, I’m getting the impression that it’s one-to-one. Just picking at details right now. Great work!
10/10: It’s very clear what you do and how you can you help. It also seems like a much needed service.
Karen Shue’s Reflections:
Tad: You’d be amazed how many people get lost doing their dissertations – enough to support a small coaching niche of its own! People want to finish for all the reasons you said. Different reasons for different people would make for an even smaller niche though – and I outline those on my website home page. The real result is to Finish, so I hoped I was addressing that right up front – there are just different ways to see the barriers (mindset – me; editing; accountability; resources; etc.) so I was trying to say what might me their best match (or not!). People do tend to stay with me after they finish, but it’s not what I’m trying to attract necessarily.
